Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) is a World Health Organization (WHO) study carried out in a large number of countries in Europe and North America. The study collects data every four years on school students aged 11, 13 and 15. It aims to gain new insight into child and adolescent health behaviours, health and lifestyles in their social context; covering a variety of topics including bullying, obesity, body image, physical activity and substance use. The findings from the study not only monitor children's health but also inform policy to improve child and adolescent health.
HBSC is the longest running international study on children's health behaviours and social context. The study initially begun in 1982 with only three countries participating. The study has grown massively since then, with 43 countries participating in the last round in 2010. England has been part of the HBSC study for the past 4 rounds, since 1997.
